О проекте:
We're a group of students at Еbo Akademi University. In a course called Cryptography and Network Security we're trying to break an encryption algorithm called DES (short for Data Encryption Standard), by doing a brute force search of the complete keyspace until we find the right key. We need to break it before the 16th of May, hence this calls for an enormous amount computer power. If you can spare any computer for this project we'd be happy. It's also possible to create a team with your friends (why not throw in a server farm or two for that extra power boost!), and compete for the top places at our stats page. Please read on for instructions on how to install and run the distributed client.

We have obtained the first bits of the key, so now the keyspace has narrowed down to 2^48 keys. Better stats for the narrowed down keyspace are coming.

DES was a project by a group of students at Еbo Akademi University in Finland to support a Cryptograpy and Network Security course they were taking. They attempted a brute force search of the DES 56-bit keyspace within 1 month. This kind of encryption was cracked by distributed.net in a one-month contest in 1998. One week into the attempt, their professor gave them the first 8 bits of the key to help them narrow the keyspace so that they would have a chance of finishing the project by the deadline. The winning key, 8a2898441652308a, was found after 383 computers searched 63% of the narrowed keyspace in 3 weeks
