Dear NOC Managers,

Desktop Grids, as a middleware technology to build e-Infrastructures, is
now available for the NGIs as a result of multi-year long joint work
between the EGEE-III and EDGeS, and between the EGI-InSPIRE and EDGI
projects. The technology is integrated with the services of the EGI Core
Infrastructure Platform, and enables NGIs to extend their resources with
desktop computers. The International Desktop Grid Federation (IDGF)
provides bridges for the seamless extension of EGI VOs with Desktop Grid
resources provided by volunteer individuals and organisations worldwide.

Despite Desktop Grids can bring various benefits for the NGIs and to
scientific communities, only a fraction of the EGI infrastructure
operators and users take desktop grids in everyday practice. The proposed
Virtual Team aims to change this picture by promoting Desktop Grid
solutions to the NGIs, to EGI VOs, and to scientific communities. The
goals of the project are:

1. Promote and train the Desktop Grid related technologies in the EGI
communities
2. Utilize the available bridged Desktop Grid resources (such as
EDGeS@home) by more VOs
3. Increase the number of heavily used EGI applications on the integrated
(Desktop Grid) infrastructure with focus on widespread
tools/solutions/approaches
4. Improve documentation including road maps
(http://desktopgridfederation.org/road-map), Training materials
(http://desktopgridfederation.org/technical-wiki), and Manuals
(http://doc.desktopgrid.hu).
5. Complete any pending action for the full integration of desktop grids
and the EGI Core Infrastructure Platform e.g. support tools
6. Find joint EGI champion(s) - IDGF ambassador(s)

The VT invites the following type of members from EGI to join: application
experts (developers and/or heavy users), infrastructure operators
(Operation managers, VO/site managers),
user support team members, dissemination team members. Minimum 0.5 and
maximum 2 person-months (depending on skills) are expected from each
participant as contribution to the VT during the next 6 months.

The attached VT project initiation document provides additional details
about the project (tasks, expected impact, benefits, etc).

Please consider joining the VT and circulate this call to colleagues who
can be interested in participating in this project. The VT will be led by
MTA SZTAKI from the Hungarian NGI and IDGF. Deadline to indicate your
interest is the 1st of November.

Many thanks.

Regards,
Gergely
