After some liberal use of Translate Google, I managed to sign up and log in. help.gif

Anyways, hello from SETI.USA.

I have a question about the "Top Participants" at Slinky (SLinCA).

I show up when selecting RAC, but not when selecting Total Credit. Are my stats being exported? Anyone know? Anyone else having a problem?

1) Will task checkpointing be implemented?

2) Any chance there will be an app for OSX or GPUs?

had to ask admin about osx, I suppose they have no macs, so if one compile it they will be avail

Now i crunch 1 WU 3:40...3:50 h on coreDuo 1,83 ghz and ~1:30 h on phenom X4 3.4 ghz.

Checkpointing is not stable yet (for all input parameters and regimes) and temporarily tasks will be cut to short-time (2-3 hours) portions only.
GPU clients is under development and local testing.

The 1st priority for us is to provide stability of long-time jobs with more complicated regimes of simulation.
The 2nd priority is to prepare wiki-description and feedback -> regular reports on current results.

I need some help getting my password reset. I'm on of those in the BOINC Wide Teams DB. I tried going through the standard "forgot my password" route, but it didn't work. I don't know if the mail server isn't set up or what.... It's not in spam (incidentally, gmail marked the validation email from these boards as spam).

My user name at the project is KSMarksPsych and the email is kathryn.boinc (doggy) gmail.com.

Yes-2. smile.gif
Actually, it was caused by tests of server hardware and ... result is that we need to upgrade it for stable work of >20000 workunits, or decrease this number.
We selected the 1st option and server hardware will be upgraded during this week with a short interruption, but after our special announcement.
Now it should work normally.

During the following 5 days (4-8 March) we foresee some potential problems with a stable power supply.
That is why, we apologize in advance, if some unpredictable problems will appear due to temporal inaccessibility of SLinCA project server.
Despite all these hardships, by our estimations we will finish the next half-year programme of calculations ... during the next week (and major upgrade of application will be made)!

The current version of SLinCA-application will be upgraded to stable checkpoinitng, some new functionality, and support of NVIDIA GPU-computing to perform the analysis faster (by estimations from 50 to 200% faster).

How long should tasks with the new app run? I reset my windows machines this AM, per instructions. And the new tasks have been running for more than 4 hours now. Is this okay? Or a problem?

Автор: Death Apr 5 2011, 22:17

looks like a problem.

as Yuri mention, you'd check in taskmanager that no lodci* tasks left in memory before resetting the project. if they keep running, project can't update them.

Автор: zombie67 Apr 5 2011, 22:20

Okay. I will abort the tasks and set to no new work. I will allow new tasks once we are told the problem has been fixed.

(zombie67 @ Apr 5 2011, 23:20) *

Okay. I will abort the tasks and set to no new work. I will allow new tasks once we are told the problem has been fixed.

Dear zombie67, Alexiz and Death, and all other SLinCA-users,
thanks for your feedback!

It seems to be that first versions of application 'lodci' were not configured properly (even after updating their binaries),
and it is not easy to clean user machine and client BOINC Manager from the initial settings of faulty versions
(the authors of project can do this manually on their own machines, but it is not appropriate for all users).
That is why we decided to eliminate conflicting versions 'lodci16v4' and 'lodci32v4',
despite some unfinished results will be lost (it is not big loss for us, but unstable work is much bigger headache for users).
Afterwhile we will reconfigure and restart them again.

All application requirements are listed at http://dg.imp.kiev.ua/slinca/apps.php and in the column of 'Application' in tab 'Tasks' of your BOINC Manager.
If the correspondent version of 'lodci*'-application run more than runtime mentioned there, then it could be faulty, because chronometry is linear now.
Besides, checkpointing should work also, please check this.

Thanks to 'Alexis Kravtchenko' and 'Sirchyk' for your detailed reports!
Thanks to 're_SET', 'pvtt', 'zombie67', and 'Death' for your care!

Our project Desktop Grid (DG) is connected to global Service Grid (SG) now!
April 11, 2011, 06:28 GMT
We are glad to announce that SLinCA@Home became the part of a global distributed computation infrastructure at production level thanks to the successful collaboration in the frame of the EU funded DEGISCO project and the EDGeS 3G Bridge technology from MTA SZTAKI. With this step, our scientific applications at SLinCA@Home Desktop Grid are executed now not only on the volunteers' home computers equipped by BOINC, but also on servers and clusters of Service Grid sites operated by HPC and Grid centers world-wide, which joined the International Desktop Grid Federation and offer capacities to numerous Desktop Grids.

The specificity of the situation: as it is known, SG was designed for high performance computing (HPC) and Grid-centers around the world and not equipped with BOINC managers!
In simple words this very complex interaction looks like channelling the workunits from SLinCA@Home DG to the SG-network (as a virtual volunteer participant), where the workunits automatically reconfigures for Linux-machines and the rules of SG, and then run on free (idle) SG resources.

Temporary withdrawal of large (> 1GB for RAM) tasks!

During the last weekend it has become clear that the big workunits (~ 2GB for RAM) in our BOINC-project were run in a very inefficient way:
- we obtained only 60 positive results from> 2000 tasks sent and they were from from Linux-machines only;
- they required large resources when the number of large workunits per machine was > 1 with blocking the RAM;
- they create bottleneck and do not allow small workunits to move to those volunteers who have less powerful machines.

Reasons?
idontno.gif
Previous ones are as follows:
- incorrect temporary memory addressing for > 2GB in our clients for Windows,
- conflicts with system calls in Win 64-bit systems (this is fixed).
So we decided to cancel and return to them after more effective optimization and elimination of such bugs.
st.gif
But we are grateful to those who managed to perform successfully these large workunits - they will be used by us!

Many thanks to re_SET, varador, Saenger, zombie67, DEATH, and many others who sent us their reports, observations and suggestions!
These conclusions and corrections have become possible only due to your help!

The updated versions appeared and 2x-credits were added for the long faulty workunits from the experimental 'lodci12x128'-version.
April 18, 2011, 10:50 GMT
The new updated versions of 'lodci'-application appear permanently after the planned upgrades and exclusion of configuration errors. The last error was related with misprint in configuration file of 'lodci12x128'-version.
Thanks to 'Saenger' and 'varador' for their reports! thumbsup.gif
'lodci12x128' was stopped and it will be started after re-configuration.
All participants will get renumeration credits that are equivalent to running the faulty workunits.
upl.gif <--- this Soviet-style ink stamp means: "it was paid" smile.gif

The project changes every day, and errors will appear constantly...
Therefore it is important to find them sooner than they cause any damage or cause your computers work in idle mode.
It is worth to note that most errors (> 80%) were found firstly by volunteers (ie by you). thumbsup.gif
We try to be open and report honestly to community about any faults that can appear in our project.
Thank you for your support!

In addition, the new invalid tasks were not accounted at this stage of re0calculation of credits.

As to the problem with 'Could not open ZIP_local file'

Many users with Windows machines (XP, Vista, 7, ...) suffer from the problem,
when their workunits were successfully calculated and credits were claimed,
BUT results were not packed in archive, because of some system limits on ZIPping files in BOINC-folder.
As a result, message 'Could not open ZIP_local file' was issued and 'Client state' becomes 'Compute error'
and 'Outcome' becomes 'Client error'.

To eliminate this problem, please, take into account http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3798&nowrap=true#24160.

We had Windows-machines running BOINC account with admin rights - so we did not notice this restriction.
idontno.gif
Yesterday we tested this recommendation on Vista,
i.e. we imitated restricted (non-admin) rights and attempted to perform the workunits -
they generated this error.

Maybe it will help you to eliminate this problem?
We would appreciate very much, if you send us your feedback!
Many thanks to 'x3mEn' http://distributed.org.ua/forum/index.php?showtopic=5082!

SERVER STATUS: Server will be offline during this weekend due to the planned repair of our regional power station.
May 13, 2011, 09:15 GMT
Tonight 'dark' Friday, 13-th day of May smile.gif will be 'absolutely black' after 17:00 GMT and during weekend, because of the planned repair of our regional power station. That is why our server will be shut down up to May, 16th 05:00 GMT. Of course, you could crunch during this time in offline regime, if you set the BIGGER value for 'Additional work buffer' parameter (>1 day) in 'network usage' panel in 'Preferences' window in your BOINC Manager.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your support!

I tried to crunch some tasks, hoping the problems have been resolved. But it appears that there are still problems. All 7 of 7 tasks errored out after 12.5 hours of run time. Please let us know when this is fixed, so I can return to the project.

This is the same error I have been getting on both my Windows machines for over a month.
I posted under the thread "Could Not Open ZIP_local File", but as I got no answer I could understand (there were answers but all were in the native language of this project and I could not read or understand the responses), I switched projects.
So i stopped using my Windows machines. My Linux machine do not get this error and are running fine and still do this project.

Conan.

As there is still no solution as to why I can't run this project under Windows, I will be setting this project to no new work.
The project uses a lot of resources (lots of memory, long running work units, cpu time) and after a quick calculation on my Linux hosts, which can run this project, I have found a poor reward for the effort involved to finish a work unit.
Only getting 14.5 cr/h .
I will check back later to see if things have improved.

Shame as I like the idea of the project but communication is also another issue.

Thanks

Conan

Dear Conan,
thank you for your care, but we are very overwhelmed now by current activities
and could not re-design the application to fix the problem - at the moment ONLY.
In any case, we are happy with your devotion and efforts to crunch our tasks -
it is especially important, because the tasks are really big - so are our scientific targets! smile.gif

As to credits per hour, you can see that SLinCA@Home is trying to be
honest among other projects (please, http://boincstats.com/stats/project_cpcs.php)
and do not give more credits than other projects (this will spoil the whole image of our position among others).
Besides, we award 2-credits (per 1-2 week) to all crunchers who faced the error with ZIP-operation at Windows ONLY. smile.gif

In any case, thank you for your efforts and advices!
worthy.gif
Hoping to fix error in 2-3 months after the current turmoil at the workplace...
Best regards!

You should better write directly to Yuri. He is the one responsible for the entire project.

Hi, zombie67!

thank you for your reminder! At the moment. we have not progress fro Windows platform (some users can run our tasks and many cannot run, alas).
Now we are working on redesign of the application, because some other bugs (related with time and statistics calculations) were found,
and will try to avoid differences in stability of Linux and Windows versions in the following version.
Beg your pardon for inconvinience!

Best regards!

I see that the apps were updated on 12/01. Did this fix the problem with the windows app?

Автор: Szopler Dec 13 2011, 20:43

If not... try do it like in BURP project. They send with their application two additional aps - windows_zip.exe & windows_unzip.exe smile.gif

It is a simple and nice idea - we will try and check its stability! Thanks!

Dear zombie67 and Rilian and all our supporters,

we restarted the project several days ago (after failure during minor upgrade)
and submitted more jobs now.
We plan a major upgrade in June and install it in July (after local testing) with a proper announcement.

Thank you and Rilian for your care and remind!

Best regards,
Yuri

SLinCA-Yuri, pidgeon mail goes long time in Ukraine, but i'm glad it finally reached you smile.gif

Yuri, if possible, please update news on project site so everyone knows where are we going

Thank you!

Yep, it would be great to have more info. If there is significant progress, I may plug an extra quad core machine into the project.
