World Community Grid is pleased to launch the Linux version of The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 (CEP2). This project is provided by the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA and hopes to find promising new materials for organic solar cells.
The extensive computing power of World Community Grid will be used to help research scientists create new materials to produce more efficient and inexpensive solar cells that will serve as viable energy sources for the world’s future needs.
CEP2 is performing electronic structure calculations: To obtain more accurate optical, electronic and other physical properties of the candidate solar materials, quantum mechanics calculations are being performed for each of the candidates. These calculations will be performed with the Q-Chem quantum chemistry software, developed by Q-Chem, Inc. This work will result in a useful database of information about the properties of a large number of compounds. This project will also provide direct input to experimental groups to aid in their design of improved solar cells.
For additional information on this project, please press the Research button in the upper navigation bar or http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/cep2/overview.do.
Action Required to Participate in CEP2
Unlike most of our other projects, we will not automatically opt anyone into CEP2. This is because CEP2 uses code that, like other World Community Grid projects, is very computationally intensive, but unlike other World Community Grid projects, it is also very data intensive. Members will have to go to their https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProjects.do page and elect to participate in this project.
At launch time, work units are only available for Linux users. Work units for Mac and Windows users are currently scheduled to be released prior to July 17, 2010. Additionally, the distribution of work units is limited to computers that have upload and download speeds of 1 Mbps or higher.
The CPU impact of this on computers is anticipated to be similar to other projects running on World Community Grid because the computer resource requirements for CEP2 are similar to that of FightAIDS@Home and HPF2. However, CEP2 requires a considerable amount of input and output data. The initial download required for this project is around 160MB and each work unit download is around 1MB. The results for a single work unit can be around 50MB, which is about 500 times larger than a typical FightAIDS@Home result. A 756kbps network connection would take approximately 12-15 minutes to download the work unit. At this time, there are no alternative solutions to overcome this issue.
CEP2 is the sixteenth research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of seven projects currently active. The other six active research projects are: Discover Dengue Drugs – Together – Phase 2 (launched February, 2010), Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy – Phase 2 (launched May, 2009), Help Fight Childhood Cancer (launched March, 2009), Help Conquer Cancer (launched November, 2007), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (launched July, 2006) and FightAIDS@Home Phase 2 (launched November, 2005). For more detailed information and FAQs about each of these projects, please click on the Research button in the upper navigation bar. We thank all of our members for their valuable contributions to the projects to date and hope you will continue to help us process those, as well as this latest project.
Because there are seven research projects running on World Community Grid, your grid agent could receive work units from any of the projects depending on your Project profile. If you prefer, you may elect to focus your computer's time only on particular projects. To do so, press the My Grid button in the upper navigation bar and select https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProjects.do. Work is sent only to machines which meet minimum system requirements set for a particular project. To read more specifics on the http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq project and the other projects, click here.
Project Badge -
If a member contributes a minimum of 14 days of CPU Run Time to this project, they will receive a CEP2 project badge on their member statistics page and next to their member name when they post in the forums. There is a different badge for each research project and beta testing. To http://worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewSearch.do?searchString=Badges, click here.

We thank you for contributing to The Clean Energy Project – Phase 2 project.
Dear World Community Grid users:
Welcome to the second phase of the Clean Energy Project! We want to thank you for contributing your idle computer time to this exciting project. Our team in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University is happy to be continuing the search for new solar cell materials using the computational time you have donated. With your help, we will be screening the properties of millions of molecules to look for the best possible candidates.
Solar cells you see most often on roofs today are made of rigid, structured semiconductors. These materials require a lot of energy to manufacture, making the overall cost of the photovoltaic cells higher. In contrast, we aim to mimic the amazing ability of plants to harvest sunlight using organic molecules. In the first phase of the project, we studied how these molecules stack together and interact with each other to form soft, bendable materials that could be included in lightweight and portable solar technologies. In this phase, we will be looking for new materials which would improve the efficiency of these carbon-based photovoltaics. Each work unit that your computer receives will be calculating the electronic properties of a new molecule, many of which have not yet been made in a lab. The chemical compounds with the best calculated properties will be sent to experimental groups to be synthesized and tested as solar cell materials!
We are very excited about the prospect of finding new solar cell materials using the time you donate to our project. In addition, we will be able to better understand the fundamental science behind solar cells by analyzing the enormous number of molecules we will have in our publicly accessible database. As the project advances, we will keep you posted on our findings in this forum. You can also visit our website for more information: http://cleanenergy.harvard.edu
Thank you again for donating your computer time for this project!

Linux є. Clean Energy
One-Time Download - Per Workunit Download - Per Workunit Upload
200 MB - 0.1 MB - 20 - 80 MB
UPD
Dear World Community Grid member,
Thank you for your interest and contributions to The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 (CEP2). Your support for this unique quantum chemistry project is key to our research to improve plastic solar cell materials.
CEP2 is a quite special cyberinfrastructure approach and differs in some ways from other World Community Grid projects - that's why you have to opt-in. Here are a few of the reasons:
* run time requirements per work unit vary notably and range from about 2-12h
* temporary disk space requirement (max. 2GB)
* memory requirement is larger than other projects
* data transfer volume (about 20-80MB upload per work unit, one time download of 200MB) are higher than usual
* CEP2 is the first WCG project to use an external server - your results are directly uploaded to Harvard for optimum efficiency
Please note that it is recommended to leave application in memory (LAIM) while running this project.
Thank you again for being a part of this exciting cutting edge research endeavor. Best wishes from Cambridge, MA.
Yours,
Harvard Team
Windows.
http://www.boinc.ru/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&m=8021#post8021
The Windows version is currently running in our internal Alpha test environment. Unfortunately we are seeing performance issues that prevent us from moving it to beta. We are working hard on these issues and will move it to beta once corrected. The Mac version will follow Windows. As always thanks for everyone's patience with this.
Thanks,
armstrdj
Windows
EKONOMIST,
Windows
Rilian,
CEP2 - Project Specific Settings
Mac
Activ Solar.

Подключи временно другие проекты, либо поставь галочку "Receive work from another projects" чтобы комп не простаивал.
fram, в настройках профиля для компьютера есть пункт "Run The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 without restrictions?", вот это оно и есть: если стоит "No" - одно задание единовременно, "Yes" - несколько.

We just sent out a computing-time grant proposal to TeraGrid (the big cyberinfrastructure of the National Science Foundation) as another complementary resource for more demanding CEP2 calculations which cannot be performed on the World Community Grid. Thanks to Sule for all the hard work that went into this proposal, and let’s keep our fingers crossed that we are successful with this.

As we have been accumulating more and more data, storage becomes an interesting challenge. After an intensive review of many options (e.g., commercial storage arrays, cloud storage at a supercomputing center, ...) we decided to build our own 90TB storage pod(s) following the Backblaze design:

Agence France-Presse.

The Clean Energy Project Publishes Paper in Nature Communications
Category: The Clean Energy Project
Tags: Accomplishments , Project Update
Summary
The Clean Energy Project researchers have published a paper in the journal Nature Communications, which describes their preliminary work in developing a method for discovering new materials for use in solar cells.
Lay Person Abstract:
The paper describes how the researchers start with a known organic semiconductor compound and use this as a starting point for creating many new hypothetical compounds. Using quantum molecular simulation software they are able to predict the properties of the compounds and use these predictions to choose the most promising ones for further laboratory study. They have demonstrated that the techniques work and are now screening a large number of such compounds using World Community Grid. They plan to publish the 1000 best candidate compounds for all scientists to study further. The goal is to find a compound that is both inexpensive to produce and with a high efficiency in converting sunlight into electrical energy.
Technical Abstract:
For organic semiconductors to find ubiquitous electronics applications, the development of new materials with high mobility and air stability is critical. Despite the versatility of carbon, exploratory chemical synthesis in the vast chemical space can be hindered by synthetic and characterization difficulties. Here we show that in silico screening of novel derivatives of the dinaphtho[2,3-b:2′,3′-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene semiconductor with high hole mobility and air stability can lead to the discovery of a new high-performance semiconductor. On the basis of estimates from the Marcus theory of charge transfer rates, we identified a novel compound expected to demonstrate a theoretic twofold improvement in mobility over the parent molecule. Synthetic and electrical characterization of the compound is reported with single-crystal field-effect transistors, showing a remarkable saturation and linear mobility of 12.3 and 16 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. This is one of the very few organic semiconductors with mobility greater than 10 cm2 V−1 s−1 reported to date.

The Clean Energy Project Publishes Paper in Physical Chemistry Letters
Summary
The Clean Energy Project researchers have published a paper in the journal Physical Chemistry Letters, giving an overview of their project to discover new materials for use in solar cells.
Paper Title:
"The Harvard Clean Energy Project: Large-Scale Computational Screening and Design of Organic Photovoltaics on the World Community Grid"
Lay Person Abstract:
The paper gives an overview of the Clean Energy Project from Harvard. It discusses the importance for finding carbon based materials that could harness the suns vast energy, potentially more economically. The process of generating chemical compound candidates using a computer is described. Various properties of the candidate compounds are calculated, primarily using the computational power of World Community Grid. The properties predicted by the computations contribute to a general scoring function which helps choose the few thousand best candidates for further study. A large number of references to related information is given along with mention of other more detailed papers written about this project.
Technical Abstract:
This Perspective introduces the Harvard Clean Energy Project (CEP), a theory-driven search for the next generation of organic solar cell materials. We give a broad overview of its setup and infrastructure, present first results, and outline upcoming developments. CEP has established an automated, high-throughput, in silico framework to study potential candidate structures for organic photovoltaics. The current project phase is concerned with the characterization of millions of molecular motifs using first-principles quantum chemistry. The scale of this study requires a correspondingly large computational resource, which is provided by distributed volunteer computing on IBM’s World Community Grid. The results are compiled and analyzed in a reference database and will be made available for public use. In addition to finding specific candidates with certain properties, it is the goal of CEP to illuminate and understand the structure-property relations in the domain of organic electronics. Such insights can open the door to a rational and systematic design of future high-performance materials. The computational work in CEP is tightly embedded in a collaboration with experimentalists, who provide valuable input and feedback to the project.

The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2?
Dear Aaron,
Again, we’d love to have a GPU version of CEP2 and we keep aiming at this in the future. But it is not an easy task to rewrite algorithms for a large and complex program package (@lawrencehardin: While Q-Chem is a commercial code with a small full-time staff, a large part of the development is actually still done by academic contributors – one of them is the Aspuru-Guzik Group). Roberto has actually helped implementing a GPU version of Moeller-Plesset Perturbation Theory (a particular kind of electronic structure method) but Density Functional Theory, which we currently use as our workhorse in CEP2, has not been redeveloped yet. Again, it is a big challenge and other people devote their research carrier to it. This work is not done in an evening! The other problem is that graphic card design is still somewhat in flow: When the 2nd generation NVidia cards came out, many algorithms developed for the first generation became obsolete... Another big challenge is that GPUs are specialized on single precision numerics (which is fine for, e.g., folding projects), while quantum chemistry overwhelmingly relies on double precision algorithms.
A ‘CEP3’ will most likely be an evolution rather than a new ballgame. We will apply other methods which are already in the current code.
The bottomline is: GPUs are great and we hope to be able to use them sooner rather than later. My guess is that implementing and then porting it to the grid may well take a year of work.
Best wishes
Your Harvard CEP team

http://www.greentechmedia.com/content/images/articles/NREL-PV-eff-3-13.jpg

http://solar-front.livejournal.com/1835.html
Updates from the Harvard Team
Hello everybody,
It is time again for another progress report on the Clean Energy Project - our friends at IBM-WCG keep reminding us that we are overdue . Sorry about that, but it’s sometimes hard to make time in our busy research schedule for things that don’t have a hard deadline or threaten to become a bottleneck. Anyways, we now finally get around to giving you an update and hope you’ll enjoy it.
Let’s start with some cool stuff on the team: The most momentous event since our last report in November (aside from blizzard Nemo) is that Alan got tenure and is now a Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology here at Harvard University. Amongst other things he got his promotion for the contributions the Clean Energy Project has made in the fields of computational materials science, materials informatics, virtual high-throughput screening, big data, and organic electronics.
In addition, Sule got an Assistant Professorship in Ankara (Turkey), to where she will relocate in the fall (but there is hope that she’ll remain a vital part of the project). A number of awards and fellowships were bestowed on various members of the CEP team (e.g., Aidan won a Rhodes Scholarship, Johannes the IBM-Loewdin and the ACS PHYS Postdoc Award). We wrote several grant proposals for money and cluster time (e.g., from the NSF DMREF “Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future” program), and we partnered up with HGST who sponsor us with hard drive donations. CEP work was presented on several conferences, webcasts, seminars, and talks over the last half year, and we wrote a book chapter on the CEP materials informatics work. This was spearheaded by Carlos, the text is titled “Towards materials informatics for organic photovoltaics”, and it will appear in “Informatics for Materials Science and Engineering”.
Now to the progress on the research front: The WCG returns have recovered nicely after a weak autumn. These days we average between 18 and 20 y/d and we have passed the mark of 15,000 years of harvested CPU time. By now we have performed 150 million density functional theory calculations on 2.3 million compounds with 24 million conformers, accumulating 400TB of data. This is unprecedented – plain and simple! We have upgraded our storage capacity to over 700TB by building and launching Jabba 4, 5, and 6. Thanks again to HGST for their support and Harvard FAS Research Computing for their help. All the Jabbas are also nicely racked now. The project progress is monitored by a new code, which automatically generates statistical analyses and plots, milestones, a timeline, and other information of interest on-the-fly. We have renewed our efforts to revamp our CEP webpage, and the new statistics code will be deployed here once it replaces the old project homepage.
The CEPDB backend was the main focus of our efforts during the last months. We have refactored, improved, and expanded its capability, both for faster queries and to get it ready for its role as an information, analysis, and cheminformatics hub. CEPDB is much more mature and powerful now, and it also contains additional data fields such as INChI, IUPAC, and common names, conversion to canonical SMILES, fingerprinting, a link to matplotlib for graphics, and a number of performance improvements. We gratefully acknowledge the input from our friends at Kitware and ChemAxon. The work on the CEPDB user frontend has also made some really nice progress and we hope to release it soon.
We have further intensified our collaborations with Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Linz University. We are providing our partners with lists of promising compounds, e.g., for high power conversion efficiency (PCE) according to the Scharber model or for low bandgap semiconductors. According to the Scharber analysis, 35,000 (i.e., 1.5%) of the screened compounds have the potential to achieve a PCE of over 10%, and 1,000 (i.e., 0.04%) of over 11%. This shows how hard it is to design high-PCE materials but at the same time it underlines that a virtual high-throughput screening can still lead to a useful number of candidates.
Our friends at Stanford pointed out to us that one of our top ten molecules (in slightly augmented form) is already known as a high-performance compound. This independent confirmation was extremely encouraging and underscored the value of the CEP results. Our friends at Haverford College have made some progress in synthesizing a compound suggested by us. Our friends at Johns Hopkins University have been using our DFT results to benchmark a new theoretical method (an SSH type model) they’ve been developing. We further provide data dumps to ChemAxon, Kitware, Wolfram Alpha, and NREL. We are currently producing a number of 2nd generation molecular libraries for our different partners.
The development team at Q-Chem Inc was provided with feedback about the performance of some employed algorithms which will hopefully help them to improve the program package. In the meantime, our friends at IBM are working on the review of a fresh revision of the Q-Chem program package for the grid.
We have introduced a new averaging scheme designed to make our results more robust. It takes the different computational results which were independently calibrated and averages over them. A preliminary statistical analysis (still using our old OE11 calibration) suggests that the error bars are surprisingly low: For the HOMO energy we get an average MAD value of 0.07eV and RMSD of 0.09eV. For the LUMO we have an average MAD of 0.09eV and RMSD of 0.12eV. This looks very promising but we need to investigate this more carefully.
In the coming months we will concentrate on expanding our data mining, analysis, and modeling tools, releasing CEPDB as part of the White House Materials Genome Initiative, writing up a number of papers, and launching new generations of workunits. There is still so much more exciting work to be done, and we are looking forward to going this together with you. Thanks so much for all your generous support, hard work, and enthusiasm – you guys and gals rock!!! CEP would not be possible without you. CRUNCH ON!
Best wishes from

Harvard global grid computing project will help create printable solar cells
Computerworld - In June, Harvard's Clean Energy Project (CEP) plans to release to solar power developers a list of the top 20,000 organic compounds that could be used to make cheap, printable photovoltaic cells (PVCs).
The list, culled from about seven million organic molecules that a crowdsourcing-style project has been crunching over the past two-plus years, could lead to PVCs that cost about as much as paint to cover a one-meter square wall.
"We're in the process of wrapping up our first analysis and releasing all the data very soon," said Alan Aspuru-Guzik, an associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard
Today, the most popular PVCs are made of silicon and cost about $5 per wafer to produce. Silicon PVCs have a maximum solar conversion efficiency rate of about 12%, meaning only 12% of the light that hits them is converted to energy.
There is also a small niche market of organic PVC vendors, but their solar cells offer only about 4% to 5% efficiency rate in converting solar rays to energy. In order for a solar product to be competitive, each would need to cost about 50 cents, according to Aspuru-Guzik.
