Man, I had a long post typed out but when I went to click submit the session timed out and it didn't save! Argh! So here I go again...

I've been meaning to post an update for well... the past few months, but somehow I always seem to get sidetracked.

First, I upgraded the server a couple weeks ago (I think it was). I added an additional 16GB of RAM (for a total of 24GB), and two more hard drives to split off some of the databases. Believe it or not, the server will use around 6GB-9GB of RAM just during non-peak hours! There's a fair amount that is used for caching, but also depending on the load all the Apache processes eat up RAM too. I think 24GB should be more than adequate for quite some time.

In case you are wondering what the specs for the server are, here's a short list, it's a Dell PowerEdge 2970.

* 2 x 146GB 2.5" 10K RPM SAS HDs (RAID-1) - Static Content

* 2 x 73GB 2.5" 15K RPM SAS HDs (RAID-1) - DB Disk 2


I think the next upgrade will be for some faster AMD Shanghai processors. But that is a long time down the road (hopefully).

Second, I was hoping to have the new version of the stats online before the end of 2008, but that didn't happen. Right now things are really chaotic around here so they are kind of put on hold until things calm down and I get some free time.

Third, here's the story of my life, at least for the past month or so. It all started back around the last week of January (this year). The guy next door was planning on putting up some office/warehouse metal buildings. He acquired the property about a year ago when it went into foreclosure (long story about that). But the previous property owner dumped a LOT of dirt on his property raising the grade (ground level) *at least* two to three feet higher than the surrounding properties! Then he (previous owner) put up a building which as you can see from the picture below is raised up about three feet on one end, requiring steps to get to the door and ramps to the warehouse doors! Not only does it look dumb (especially from the neighbor's side), but people scrape the bottom of the concrete going in and out of the warehouse doors because they are at such an incline. So anyhow, back to the current property owner, which I shall refer to as that, "egotistical jackass next door" decided to raise the grade even more. He brought in a constant stream of dump trucks for a week and now the dirt is as high as FIVE FREAKING FEET higher than ours, right along the property line! I look out my window and I'm almost eye level with the base of a (future) concrete slab! The picture with the chain-link fence & bulldozer I think tells it best. The "chain" part of the fence is six feet high, and the slab where you see the water well is the same level as the building next to it. You can not honestly look at that picture and tell me that is not excessive! I couldn't even get the angle right to show the true height, when you are standing here looking at it, it looks even higher.

So yes we complained to the county, and initially we found out he started work without any permits. They shut him down for a couple weeks and were investigating into the matter. Amazing, just when you think the system is working for you, things end up taking a u-turn. Now he's back at work full-bore on all three slabs and *supposedly* has his permits. Even though it is required by law to have permits posted out front by the street, he has not bothered to do so. The county won't return phone calls either. Besides what I'm telling you, there's a whole bunch of other "issues" going on next door that are getting swept under the rug. So now we are taking it to the state level, and also have contacted the media. It's a very slow process, and sadly most departments while they love to collect taxes & fess, do not have the "authority or resources" to enforce anything! It can really make your stomach churn. In the end I'm sure no action will ever happen, except when we flood then we can sue the crap out of him and the county, but by then the damage will have been done. It just ain't right...
