Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established on January 10, 1997 when PETRONAS was invited by the Malaysian government to set up a university. The campus is built on a 400 hectare (1,000 acre) site strategically located at Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia. The University is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil company of Malaysia.

UTP offers a wide range of engineering and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels complemented with a strong focus on Research and Development. The programmes are designed with high industry relevance to provide a dynamic learning environment. High-Performance Computing (HPC) Service Center, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), is a service center that provides computing services for high-end engineering and the physical sciences.

The mission of the HPC Service Center is to develop, promote and facilitate the use of HPC environments in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) to address problems in the engineering and physical sciences fields.

The objectives are to:

Encourage the use of cutting edge computational techniques in engineering research.
Develop expertise and facilities for developing HPC-based solutions to engineering problems that could not otherwise be resolved.
Work together with UTP's Mission-Oriented Research (MOR) in acquiring fund to ensure a continual upgrade of HPC-related facilities.

UTP Desktop Grid (UTPDG) is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in various areas of parallel computational problems. You can participate by downloading and running a free BOINC client on your computer.

BOINC Client Mass Installation
February-June, 2012
The BOINC Client Mass Installation in numerous labs in UTP by the HPC Service Center Crews and the HPC Heroes, consisted of UTP students from both Undergraduate and Post-Graduate. Currently we have 20 labs installed with the total of around 500 PCs as compute nodes.

Desktop Grid Workshop
March 21, 2012
Desktop Grid Workshop was conducted from 21st till 22nd March 2012, involving members of UTP HPC Service Center. This workshop was conducted by Mr. Farhan Sjauqi, from NovaGlobal.

Visit By Dr. Robert Lovas
June 7, 2012
On 7th of June 2012, Dr. Robert Lovas, from International Desktop Grid Federation (IDGF) has visited UTP HPC Service Center. He was accompanied by Mr. Farhan Sjaugi from NovalGlobal. Among the agenda of the visit is to share experience and consultation on Desktop Grid setup and implementation. UTP HPC Service Center is currently having BOINC client installed on all the PCs in 20 computing labs in UTP.
