1. Завантажте BOINC менеджер (Якщо його у Вас ще немає!)
2. Перейдіть у "розширений вигляд"
3. Оберіть сервіс ---> додати проєкт
4. Введіть адресу проєкту http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/
5. Введіть свої реєстраційні дані.
6. Знайдіть нашу команду. Вона називається Ukraine і адресу її статистики ви могли бачити вище.
7. Якщо є доступні для завантаження завдання, Ви їх отримаєте і почнете розрахунки.

Корисна інформація:
Для ідентифікації користувача в BOINC можуть слугувати 2 речі:
1) пара e-mail/пароль
2) міжпроєктний ідентифікаційний ID (Cross-project ID) - 32-значне шістнадцяткове число.

Якщо Ви забажаєте підключитись ще й до іншого BOINC-проєкту, то пам'ятайте: щоб не плодити нових акаунтів при підключенні до нового проєкту або команди, потрібно обов'язково скрізь реєструватись з одним і тим самим e-mail/паролем або CPID. Якщо при реєстрації в проєкті вказати інші e-mail або пароль, BOINC створить новий акаунт з тим самим ім'ям!

Якщо у вас є бажання допомогти команді, не набираючи очки на свою статистику, можна використовувати так званий "слабкий ключ акаунту" (weak account key), який дозволяє підключатись до проєкту без введення паролів. Всі очки будуть присвоюватись командному користувачу distributed.org.ua

Щоб підключитись:
0) встановіть BOINC
1) створіть файл account_milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway.xml у папці \data\
2) у файл помістіть текст

Про проєкт:
Наша Галактика належить до систем, що постійно змінюються, і розуміння того, як вона змінюється, може допомогти нашим уявленням про будову та еволюцію всього Всесвіту починаючи від Великого Вибуху і до нинішнього її стану, а також може допомогти будувати прогнози на майбутнє. Зокрема, у цьому проєкті вивчається питання злиття галактик на прикладі приєднання карликової еліптичної галактики у сузір'ї Стрільця до Нашої Галактики Чумацький Шлях. Оскільки Наша Галактика у багато разів більша, то вона, за допомогою своєї гравітації, розтягує і розриває карликову еліптичну галактику та "втягує" її в себе кількома приливними потоками. Цей процес триватиме кілька мільярдів років. У дуже примітивному вигляді його можна побачити, перейшовши за посиланням. Його вивчення має велике значення для прогнозування вигляду Чумацького Шляху у далекому майбутньому. Крім того, вивчення таких галактичних злиттів допомагає оцінити гравітаційний потенціал Чумацького Шляху, який більш ніж на 90% пов'язаний з так званою "темною матерією" та її розподілом у Нашій Галактиці. Проєкт також може допомогти побудові моделі густини простору Всесвіту.

Окрім злиття галактик, у проєкті вивчається взаємодія зірок і спіральних рукавів Чумацького Шляху. Це допоможе у моделюванні майбутнього Нашої Галактики.

Якщо для когось здається, що проєкт "не дуже потрібний", то можна нагадати, що Земля разом із Сонячною системою обертається навколо галактичного центру і під час свого обертання може проходити повз інші зірки, туманності тощо.

Існує багато теорій, які пояснюють зникнення динозаврів, льодовикові періоди, "обстріл" Землі астероїдними та кометними дощами тощо саме проходженням Сонячної системи поблизу масивних зірок або через пилові туманності.
Проєкт використовує дані спеціального 2,5-метрового телескопа Apache Point (USA). Там є величезна кількість даних для вивчення, які безперервно поповнюються. Тож закінчиться проєкт явно не скоро.

Project News: Application Code v0.18b Released


2009-02-13: I've upated the alpha release of the v0.18 application. It should now compile correctly. It has some changes for a small checkpointing bug and more performance improvements. I'm going to let other people try it out for a bit before I update the stock application. So if all goes well stock should upgrade to 0.18 in a couple days. After we've updated the stock application to v0.18 and we see that it's working correctly and we have optimized versions of it available, I'm going to stop awarding credit to pre 0.18 compiled applications, because we don't have any other way to get people to upgrade their optimized applications. I'll post a news item as a warning and provide links to appropriate v0.18 applications so that everyone has time to upgrade their applications before I make the switch.

I started some new searches, these are doing particle swarm optimization (as opposed to the newton method), so let me know how the WUs are crunching. These workunits should start with 'ps' instead of 'nm'.

2009-02-15: MilkyWay@home - Project News:d Stock Application
I've updated the stock application for linux and os x to v0.18. The code is in the code release directory as mw_v0.18d. This has a couple new performance improvements (thanks to our users) which has it running 30% faster, or more. This should bring our stock application (and some of the other optimized versions of it) in line with the fastest optimized apps we're seeing out there. Because of this, in the next day or so we'll have another (much loved) credit modification. I'll most likely be dropping the credit rate by about 30-50% but at the same time removing the credit limit. Due to the nature of the performance improvements, older hosts should see better performance improvements than newer ones, so for most people the credit/hr should be the same, while faster hosts might lose some credit or gain some credit depending on where they are compared to the speed limit.

I've updated the credit rates, WUs should be generating around 12 credit each for the new searches. I've also lifted the credit limit. This is a pretty big change so there's probably going to be a bit more tweaking to be done, but I'm going to see how this goes for awhile.

February 17, 2009 No More Insta-Purge
I've set the purge to 3 hours now, so you should be able to look at your workunits for awhile. If it doesn't kill the server in the next few days I'll look into increasing it to 6 or 12 hours. We might even be able to get it back to a day.

Return of the Credit Reduction
Sorry guys, but in order to have some semblance of cross project parity in this (at the request of other projects), we had to reduce credit again. New WUs should now be generating around 6.1 credit for stripes 79, 82 and 86, and around 9.2 credit for stripes 20 and 21. Other projects have been getting requests from their users to increase credit to match ours from their users, because they felt they couldn't compete -- and this is exactly the situation we'd like to avoid.

Another Credit Reduction
Given some discussion about credit rates, and the fact that the standard is 1GFLOPs/day = 100 credits. 1GFLOPs/day = 100 credits would mean 79, 82 and 86 WUs would be generating ~1.4 credits, while 20 ad 21 would be generating ~2 credits per WU. I think this is too low. What I'm thinking about dropping credits to around 4-6 credit per 79, 82 and 86 WU, and 6-9 credit per 20 and 21 WU. I'm open to a bit of discussion on this because given that we're an alpha project I think our credit shouldn't be too low considering what you guys have to put up with here, however it definitely shouldn't be 10x what the supposed rate should be.

I think the drop to 6/9 credits was a bit much (for now), so I've upped the credits to 8/12 credits for stripes 79/82/86/20/21. I'm really gonna let this sit for awhile (promise) and see how things pan out, unless something drastic happens.

Minimum Application Version to 0.16
The server won't be awarding credits to applications with a version number less than 0.16. If you're not receiving credit for your optimized application then you probably need to update it to a more recent version. There are links to valid optimized applications in our code discussion and number crunching forums. If any valid applications are having problems with this, please let me know.
